A small fire in a Massachusetts kitchen is being blamed on the family's hungry dog.

Westport firefighters said they were called Wednesday to a stove fire in a home off Rt.6. They arrived to find a small amount of smoke coming from the door.

Inside, they found that the homeowner had put out a small fire on the stove.

According to the fire department, it is believed that the family dog may have started the burner by reaching some food that was left on a cutting board. The board caught fire.

Fortunately, the fire was quickly spotted and put out before it could spread, the fire department said.

Firefighters cleared the smoke from the building and looked for any further spread of the fire.

Officials used the story as an opportunity to remind everyone to check that home and office smoke and carbon monoxide detectors and extinguishers are in good functioning order.
