STROM SLS 3D printer for PEKK to debut at Formnext | VoxelMatters - The heart of additive manufacturing

Oct 31, 2024

A few months ago, Verne Additive Manufacturing Labs announced it was developing a new selective laser sintering (SLS) solution capable of processing high-temperature polymers like PEKK. Now, the young company—a Spengler brand—is preparing to unveil this new solution, STROM, at Formnext 2024 in Frankfurt next month.

Typically, processing high-performance polymers like PEKK has been a challenge for SLS, largely due to the cost associated with both the necessary hardware and the raw materials. Verne has tackled this issue by developing a more affordable system that can reach high temperatures up to 380°C (most standard SLS systems print at temperatures around 200°C).

The ability to process a broader range of materials, including high-performance PEKK (in addition to more standard SLS powders like PA12, PA11, etc), will open up applications for the technology, particularly in industrial and engineering spheres. Notably, PEKK is well suited for metal replacement applications due to its excellent strength-to-weight ratio, as well as good chemical resistance and high temperature resistance.

The STROM, which will make its world debut at Formnext 2024, reportedly has a build volume of 220 x 250 x 400 mm, a size “compatible with the needs of research centers and universities,” as Spengler says. The upcoming 3D printer also integrates a 40W CO2 laser (or a fiber laser configuration), an infrared camera temperature control system, layer-by-layer image analysis and AI-driven process enhancement strategies.

In addition to presenting Verne AM’s STROM platform at Formnext 2024 (booth G128, hall 12.1), Spengler is also introducing a new post-processing solution for SLS, MJF or SLM parts. The Super VibroBlast is a larger version of the company’s existing VibroBlast solution, an automated powder removal and surface blasting system compatible with both plastic and metal parts. The new Super VibroBlast, which has a 120L capacity, is described as “more powerful and more efficient” to meet the needs of higher production volumes.

The STROM and Super VibroBlast are part of what will be a fully integrated end-to-end production ecosystem, comprising the SLS 3D printer, the SM-1 automatic powder management system, the Trolley transport system, VibroBlast for powder removal and bead blasting and SurfPro for automated surface finishing.
